Gentoo Linux was first created by Daniel Robbins in 2002 and is
available for various computer architectures, including the
alpha, amd64, arm, hppa, ia64, mips, ppc and ppc64 (Apple Macs),
s390, sparc and x86 (Intel Pentium PCs). Gentoo has its own very
advanced package management system called Portage, and most programs
are compiled directly on to your computer from source code.
For those already using a Linux distribution, there is a script named
funtoo-script.sh to download and run. Funtoo Linux is based on Gentoo,
but is more user friendly. It creates the folder ~/funtoo in
your /home directory.
Here are the list of the directories or folders that make up
the
Gentoo Linux distribution:
distfiles/ -- Linux program source files.
experimental/ -- Linux program files in beta.
grp/ -- Some binary files. (Sometimes empty!)
releases/ -- CD iso images to burn onto CDs.
snapshots/ -- Portage, the advanced package management system.
gentoo-portage/ -- A list of the program files in Gentoo.
