Slackware Linux was first created by Patrick Volkerding at
the end of 1992, with
Version 1.0 appearing in July 1993, making it the oldest Linux
distribution in
existence today.
Slackware comes in 4 CDs, and the contents include general
installation, a choice of
KDE and Xfce Desktops, The Slackware manual in electronic form, and
Zipslack, a
version of Slackware Linux that you can install alongside Microsoft
Windows without
having to Partition your hard drive. There is also an option of
creating bootdisks
and rootdisks on a floppy disk, something which is rarely performed
today by most
other Linux distributions.
Although Slackware does not have a large repository of software,
you can add Slackware
compatible software to your computer by going to various Slackware
vendors such as
Linux Packages.net and
Userlocal, or to compile
the programs individually from source.
